EM34 COMPATIBLE MAGIC EYE TRANSFORMATION EXPLANATION

In the process of restoring radios to tubes, one of the most striking visible parts is the magic eye. That serves as a visual guide to know if a station is well tuned or not.

During the 1940s and 1950s, spherical magic eyes, such as 6af7g, 6e5, 6u5, em34, em35, became fashionable. Many of these magic eyes today are extremely expensive and hard to come by, such as em34 and em35.

For our restorations we use spherical magic eyes different from em34 and em35 but we make a modification of the pin connection, inserting it in a new socket at the base of the modified magic eye, and whose final result is a magic eye totally compatible with em34, where it is only necessary to insert the compatible one in the socket.

- Cut all the pins to adapt them to a size that is compatible with the size of the octal socket where it is inserted.

- Welding of a cable extension to make the new wiring compatible with the operation of the em34

- Introduction, adjustment and welding of these cables to the pins of the new octal socket

- Adjustment, filing of the terminals so that it can enter the octal socket of the radio.

- Application of super fast glue on the base of the glass and the old socket and application of special gripping paste between the new socket and the old one

- Testing with the same conditions of use of the em34 magic eye in our computerized tester. (watch video)

Features of the new compatible product:

- Spherical magic eye compatible with em34, but only with a lighting section

- Total length, from the upper glass part to the lower pins: 120mm

- Diameter of the thickest part of the glass: 40mm

- Diameter of the thickest part in the socket 40mm

- We must take into account that the original em34 magic eye has dimensions of 90mm long and 28mm thick, and if it was located in a location inside a tube or similar, the substitute magic eye cannot be installed. In all other cases it will be fully compatible since the front part where the part that lights up is of a similar diameter to the em34.

The magic eyes compatible with the modification may have small visual defects such as: traces of glue on the glass, traces of white putty on the edges of the sockets, being deviated from their central axis, small visual defects of traces of solder tin on the pins, also that the tin applied to the pins may have a slightly thicker thickness that makes it difficult to insert it into the radio socket (it is solved by filing this tin a little), luminosities a little lower than the common pattern of an em34.

For the rest, a magic eye compatible with the em34 will be delivered, which will perform its function correctly as soon as it is installed on the radio.
